From Avoidance to Action

Embrace Reality and Overcome Stress

15 days left in the quarter.

Difference of the Day #87

Is there something that is slowly but surely draining your energy? The time has come to take control and make a change.

In behavioral science, there is a principle called the "Ostrich Effect," which highlights people's tendency to avoid information perceived as unpleasant. This could be knowing the balance on a credit card, opening bills, making a postponed medical appointment, or facing a crucial question.

Avoidance has an actual cost. Imagining something negative while waiting generates stress, like a bubble about to burst. This stress accompanies you as you deal with other things, and your fear prevents you from being the best version of yourself. It also keeps you from working on solutions. Knowing the situation lets you take charge of your life and choose the way forward.

In his book "Meditations," the Stoic philosopher Marcus Aurelius wrote, "The first rule is to keep an untroubled spirit. The second is to look things in the face and know them for what they are."

It is worth noting that ostriches have been unfairly vilified for years. In reality, they rotated their eggs buried in nests just below the surface of the sand to ensure an even distribution of sunlight and warm their offspring.

So, take an example from the ostrich's actual behavior: deal with what needs attention and take care of what is essential.

In the end, the situation is not so bad. And if it is, at least now it is in the sunlight. You have the power to take control and responsibility; by doing so, you have eliminated the anxiety of the unknown, allowing you to move forward without fear.

We are sure that this day has come, and it will pass.
Making a difference? Well, that's up to you.

Today, Make A Difference.
