The Tiger, the Cliff, and the Luscious Strawberry

Embracing the Present Moment

42 days left in the quarter.

Difference of the Day #60

There is an old parable about a tiger and a strawberry. It tries to tell the story of presence, presence in the moment, in the here and now. It asks you, strictly speaking, if you can enjoy the moment. And it goes something like this.

Once upon a time, a man was chased by a fierce tiger through the jungle. He ran relentlessly, desperate to escape certain doom. Huge leaves brushed his face until he came to the edge of the rainforest, to the edge of a precipice. There was nowhere to hide.

The tiger slowly approached. The man walked backward. The stones crunched under his feet as he stepped back. And just before the tiger jumped, the man stumbled backward.

He fell but clung to a faint sapling protruding from the rock. Beneath it was a perfect strawberry, caressed by the sun's warm rays.

Red, delicious, glowing. He had never seen such a perfect strawberry. It shone right before him, within reach, its beauty and allure captivating him.

The tiger kept threatening overhead, walking back and forth. The rocks kept falling beside him and then disappearing into the abyss.

His fate was sealed.

But that strawberry shone, almost touching his lips. He could smell it under his nose. Delicious. Ripe. Juicy.

So the question is, "What should he do? The answer is only one: Enjoy the Strawberry.
